    Introduce Yourself

Well, hey. Been on Simler for a while now (a few months anyway), may as well at long last introduce myself.

Name's Chris. I'm a very laid-back kinda guy, not all that outgoing. I tend to stick to myself most of the time, and enjoy it, which I believe would make me an introvert; being around people for extended periods of time (and I'm talking just a few hours here) definitely drains me out.

I'm a nerd. I play old video games and obsess over pixel art graphics and chiptunes. I'm a sidescroller fan for life; I wish more of them were still being made. I'm really heavily into most of the Castlevania games, especially the older style. I love all the music from the series as well, and own a few of the soundtracks.

I like movies. Movies are neat. I'm big into horror films and underground/cult cinema. I like 'em all: the subtle ones of yore, the all-out gore-fests of the '80s and now. Good stuff. It's fun seeing how people from varying countries make horror films (or any kind of film for that matter).

I enjoy listening to industrial and synth pop music. Got a thing for synthesizers and sampling. Skinny Puppy's my favorite band. Pet Shop Boys are a very close second.

Recently got big into comic books again. Been reading a ton of TMNT stuff, and assorted books and collections here and there. Rick Veitch is totally awesome.

I dig anime. I also dig old cartoons from the Golden Age of American Animation, particularly anything by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett. Also a big Ren & Stimpy fan, at least of the stuff the creator John K. is involved with.

I like to write, to some degree; and draw, to an even smaller degree. Not particularly good at either, but I try to advance and become better. Maybe if I ever get good at both, and at using my imagination, I'll write my own comic book.

Lastly, though most importantly, I'm a Christian. (That is, I believe in Christ Jesus as the God and Savior as described in the Bible--that collection of books, letters, and other writings being the divinely inspired Word of God--and that God calls me to live according to it.) I feel that to define my life by any other means is dissatisfying. I believe God created the world and all of the good things within it for the enjoyment of mankind. All of the things I like are enjoyable because God is enjoyable, and I find they become even more enjoyable when He's involved with my regular life. He has a way of blessing His children, I find.

That's all. Nice to meet you. 3 months, 2 weeks ago

    Milk and Cereal

    That is, the viral thing.

The original Milk and cereal-IN HIGH QUALITY!
    YouTube

I first saw this video like a decade ago. OK, maybe it wasn't that long—more like seven to eight years, but that's close.

I never knew until less than a year ago that it became a huge thing where others would "remake" the original video. Do their own "Milk and Cereal" thing. Just type the words in YouTube and you'll get a zillion different results.

Well, above is the original, and the only one, as far as I'm concerned. It is magical. Enjoy at all costs. 1 month ago

    No More Heroes (video game)

And so, the sequel is out, and I got a really great price on it at Amazon ($37), but I stupidly went with the free shipping option. If I had paid for UPS (what, three measly dollars?), they probably would have shipped it out at the beginning of the week and I'd have had it on release date, and could be basking in all its surrealistic gonzo glory right now. But noooo! Now I gotta wait until next week sometime (unless it miraculously arrives this weekend, which I highly doubt).

Guess I'll entertain myself with Muscle March for the time being.

    Worst Movies Ever

    Battle Royale II

Now, I certainly don't think the first film is the cult masterpiece that a lot of people herald it for. It's good, but not that good.

But the sequel is a total travesty and a disgrace to the first film and its deceased director. Normally, I finish a film I start, no matter how bad. (I'm kind of a cinemasochist.) But this one, I achingly got an hour into, with an hour to go, and I could not do it. I simply could not subject myself to any more of this crap—particularly since it was getting worse by the minute. Somehow, despite the first movie being nothing at all like this, it turned into a total gunplay movie with lots of ammo spraying all around. And yet, it's the most boring gun action I have ever laid eyes on. It's really, really awful and mind-numbingly bland.

Only worthwhile part, of what I saw, was Riki Takeuchi. That guy's always cool. I feel like rewatching the Dead or Alive series now (the Takashi Miike films, not those video games with the buxom babes or any movie[s] based on them). 1 month, 2 weeks ago

After instantly falling in love with the song, I found out that the whole album was produced by Stuart Price (of [Les Rythmes Digitales], Zoot Woman, etc.), whom I greatly admire. Shame the physical album isn't out in the States; guess I'll have to buy it off iTunes. 2 months, 1 week ago

As is everything else with the song—composition, production, vocal performance, and other instrumentation.

I really love [Les Rythmes Digitales]. 'Darkdancer' is a stellar album, more so the UK version since the US one has some inferior mixes for certain tracks. 2 months, 1 week ago

The Road is one of the most horrible movies I've ever seen. Not horrible as in crappy (it's not—it's incredible), but it did a good job of making me feel dreadful. I hope the world never ends up like that...

It also has, bar none, the scariest scene I've ever seen in a film. I may very well have nightmares tonight.

    Absurdity

I have a thing for coming up with ridiculous character names.

First there was Mantos, the Flesh Raker--which is, of course, a play on the Mentos slogan. I imagine him as a cross between Conan the Cimmerian/Barbarian and the Grim Reaper.

Then a few days ago, I thought up Negrobot: The Negroid Android. (Sorry if this offends anyone. It's not racist, I swear.)

    Now, tonight:

    Gaygent: Agent Gay Gentleman

    I rule.

I've also got a thing for making up absurd porno titles, like "Queer Pal" Yankadic, for one; Doppelgängbänger, for two. OK, I'll stop. 3 months ago

    Calvin and Hobbes

One of the best Christmas presents ever was when my oldest brother gave me the complete collection. He got it for free from a friend of his who was high-up at Borders, so free gifts that were free gifts are doubly rad!

As a kid, I would pore (and pour) over the paperback collected books while eating breakfast each morning. Breakfast would last over an hour; I'd just keep refilling the bowl with more milk and cereal while laughing away and occasionally spitting out little milk droplets from laughter. If ever I get married, I intend on passing these tattered collections on to the kids in the hopes they do the same. 3 months ago

So pissed that when these guys came to play in Minneapolis, they were 21+ shows at clubs that really stressed the age limit. I was like 18 at the time; I believe they played during their tour in support of 'Perpetuum Mobile'. So annoyed they haven't come back to play since. Same with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
